of the bride. proves it's never too late. queen elizabeth topped the bbc's list of the uk's most powerful women followed by the likes of adelle, j.k. rowling and kate beckham. kate mitt widdlmiddleton did no list. and jay z spoke conac right out of the trophy. this is msnbc. stay tuned, "way too early" with brian shactman starts right now. >> thanks to the grit and determination of the people, will is much month progress to report. together we have cleared away the rubble of crisis.
2:31 am
and we can say when with renewed confidence that the state of our union is stronger. >> president obama taking his second term agenda to the american people during last night's state of the union address. good morning, everyone. this is "way too early," the show whose staff would welcome a hike in the minimum wage. a little state of the union humor for you on this wednesday, february 13th. we have a lot to talk about including what appears to be the conclusion to that deadly standoff with alleged cop killer chris dorner. we'll have the latest on that story straight ahead plus a fire breaking out on that carnival cruise stranding 3,000 passengers with only five working bathrooms. that would be safe to say the worst vacation ever. before that, we get to our top story. in the first state of the union address since winning a second term, president obama calling for smarter government and focused largely on the struggles of the middle class. the hour-long speech hit on
2:32 am
themes such as raising the minimum wage and infrastructure. in the eyes of the president, the nation will have a hard time seeing any progress unless the partisan politics of washington give way to cooperation and a little bit of common sense. >> let's set party interests aside and replace a budget that replaces reckless cuts with smart savings and wise investments in our future and let's do it without the brinksmanship that stresses consumers an scares off investors. the greatest nation on earth -- the greatest nation on earth cannot keep conducting its business by drifting from one manufactured crisis to the next. we can't do it. let's agree right here, right now to keep the people's government open and pay our bills on time and always uphold the full faith and credit of the united states of america. >> also on his domestic agenda,
2:33 am
immigration reform. an issue that actually has potential for support from both sides of the aisle. >> our economy is stronger when we harness the talents and ingenuity of striving, hopeful immigran immigrants. and right now leaders from the business labor, law enforcement, faith communities, they all agree that the time has come to pass comprehensive immigration reform. now is the time to do it. now's the time to get it done. let's get this done. send me a comprehensive immigration reform bill in the next few months and i will sign it right away and america will be better for it. let's get it done. >> by the way if, you're a democrat, you didn't have to do that kettle bell workout. up and down, up and down. along with immigration, the issue of gun legislation dominating the recent attention and was pretty much the most intense part of the speech last night in terms of emotion with the parents of a young victim of
2:34 am
violence seated alongside the first lady. president obama pressed his case before congress and the nation. >> hadiyah's parents are in this chamber tonight along with more than two dozen americans whose lives have been torn apart by gun violence. they deserve a vote. they deserve a vote. gabby giffords deserves a vote. the families of newtown deserve a vote. the families of aurora deserve a vote. the families of oak creek and tucson and blacksburg and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence, they deserve a simple vote. >> the president also pivoted to the war in afghanistan where he made news by announcing another milestone in the push to wind
2:35 am
down america's longest conflict. >> tonight i can announce that over the next year another 34,000 american troops will come home from afghanistan. this drawdown will continue. by the end of next year, our war in afghanistan will be over. >> joining us now, chief white house correspondent for "politico" mike allen. i want to start with what surprised you about the speech? anything in there? >> the speech was very ambitious. meat on the bones of the vision the president described in the inaugural address. and then the inaugural address we heard him describing the world as he would like it to be. last night we heard the president talking about the road to get there. and he's building pressure from outside on congress to do things they don't necessarily want to do. that little clip you showed where the president said let's get this done. that deliberately echoed the words of gabby giffords in the most emotional part of that speech, getting the country to
2:36 am
push congress on guns. >> mike, let me ask you then, i mean it was the most emotional part of the speech. but there is a lot of debate about what will get done. what is your best guess of what could pass here in terms of actual legislation? >> yeah. probably pass is modest, the president knows that. probably increased registration requirements. there's no ban on assault weapons or as the president last night called them weapons of war. but if we asked a year ago if any kind of gun control would be in the offing, we would have said no way. similarly on immigration, there's a deal to be had here on immigration. the senate again is going to go first. the shou the house is going to hang back and wait for them to act. this is another place where the president wants to change the face of america in next couple weeks. he started last night with a quote by jfk. this is an address that could have been delivered by lbj.
2:37 am
the president is saying i'm looking beyond these budget battles which have jammed the pipeline and congress. i want congress to do more. i want my second term to be about more. >> right. takes two to tango with a logjam. democrats on one side and the republicans on the other side. marco rubio of florida delivering the republican response. let's take a quick look at a portion of that. >> his solution to virtually every problem we face is for washington to tax more, borrow more and spend more. the idea that more taxes and more government spending is the best way to help hard-working middle class taxpayers, that's an old idea that's failed every time it's been tried. more government isn't going it help you get ahead. it's going to hold you back. more government isn't going to create more opportunities. it's going to limit them. >> of course, we'll get to watergate later. but in terms of the republican party, does that sound like a party that's willing to work with the president on these things? >> well, the party itself looks pretty unwilling to work with
2:38 am
the president. just yesterday the house speaker john boehner in a meeting with -- breakfast meeting with television correspondents and anchors said he didn't think that president obama had the guts to do something big, to fix entitlement. that doesn't sound like somebody about to make a deal. senator rubio wanted to put a little rat n literal new face on the party. at the end he said god bless the presidentment president. he told his story coming up as a family that was an only in america story coming up from cuba. he talked about the fact that he still lives in a middle class neighborhood. he said i'm not trying to protect the rich. i'm trying to protect my neighbors. >> it will be interesting to hear what joe has to say at the top of the hour. mike allen will be joining us. members of congress were locked in a bitter fight over the nomination of chuck hagel as the next secretary of defense.
2:39 am
in a sharply divided 14-11 vote, the arms services committee sent his nomination to the senate floor but only after hours of pretty intense debate. >> we saw with his nomination something truly extraordinary which is the government of iran formally and publicly praising the nomination of a defense secretary. i would suggest to you that to my knowledge that is unprecedented to see a foreign nation like iran publicly celebrating a nomination. >> i want to put on the record that this senator feels like that senator cruz has gone over the line. he basically has impugned the patriotism of the nominee. in your conclusions which you're entitled to come to about him in essence being cozy with iran. >> my friend senator nelson was, i think i wrote down the words
2:40 am
criticizing our senator there for implying that chuck hagel was cozy with terrorist type countries, referring to iran. i'll only say not only -- i'd say he's endorsed by iran. you can't get any cozier than that. >> i have to tell you, senator, be careful. because you might have an organization that would endorse you that you find abhorrent. and then would you have the right to say -- would i have the right to say you were cozy with them? what if some horrible organization tomorrow said you were the best guy they knew? >> senator hagel is an honorable man. he served his country and no one on this committee at any time should impugn his character or his integrity. >> intense stuff. officials in california now confirm the body has been found in a burned out cabin where a former police officer and alleged murderer took cover amid
2:41 am
a massive federal manhunt. the suspect 3shgs 3-year-old chris dorner never emerged from the building as it was consumed by flames. according to investigators, the former navy reservist shot two deputies yesterday killing one as the officers surrounded his position about 80 miles east of los angeles. the suspect is accused of killing at least four people over the last week in what was considered revenge for his firing from the lapd. although it's still unclear what sparked the fire, police say they heard a single gunshot from inside the cabin and medical testing is now being done to confirm the body's identity. also, thousands of people onboard a disabled cruise ship have another nasty day ahead of them. anyone who has ever been on vacation can certainly have some sympathy on this one. shortage of food, sweltering heat and broken bathrooms, the ship's arrival back on shore could not come soon enough. >> reporter: it's a long, slow ride. tug boats drive the disabled cargo cruise ship to mobile.
2:42 am
and with five working toilets, for some 3,000 passengers, it's a pretty miserable ride. donna gutsman is onboard. >> the worst part is the bathrooms. there's no water. you can't really flush. so everyone's going in little plastic baggies. >> the stench is inescapable. there is no air conditioning onboard. many with interior gcabins have taken mattresses to other areas. >> they're sleeping on the deck on lounge chairs and the boat is just rocking back and forth because there's no stabilization. >> reporter: food service is limited. onion sandwiches were reportedly on the menu and the wait for something to eat can last up to three hours. marissa's mother is celebrating her birthday on the ship. >> people are starting to get very frustrated is what she was saying. you know, it's a very panicky situation. >> triumph has been dead in water and drifting north since an engine room fire sunday.
2:43 am
plans to tow it to mexico were scrapped when the ship drifted too far north. now being towed to alabama, it will be late wednesday or even thursday before passengers are finally able to get off. >> i have enough trouble with 50 people on an airport and a bathroom. that is just unbelievable. that was nbc's janet chandley reporting. i haven't heard of onion sandwiches being eaten since i read hemingway in high school. as always, let us know why you're awake. shoot us an e-mail, if you can name the hemingway book where he ate onion sandwiches or you can tweet me with other obscure references, we'll read your responses later. marco rubio takes an awkward water break while delivering the spans to president's speech. we'll show you the clip and other moments you may have missed from last night's state of the union address. plus, lewis selflessly offered
